Setrawa EC:  Teachers | Sambhali Song

Setrawa is a small desert village, 110km from Jodhpur, with a population of 3000 people. Ranging from Dalits to Brahmins, and extreme poverty to comfortable living, it is a diverse community that often requires everyone in the family to work, cook, or study in the hopes to continue everyday life.

Sambhali school in Setrawa was opened in October 2007 has continuously progressed month after month. The Centre allows hardworking girls and women to have a place not only to work and learn, but also to relax and play. It provides both an after-school programme for girls who go to school, but also a centre for uneducated girls to read basic Hindi, Maths and English, and a chance for them to wash and clean themselves. Recent changes also include the addition of Saturday School, where the centre holds workshops, ranging from Geography, to recycling, to Drama. Saturday is also a day where the girls’ brothers and families are welcome to join, and has facilitated in making Sambhali more accepted and respected in the local community.

Some major goals

To aid children already attending school with extra English classes before and after school hrs.

To provide education for those who cannot afford it.

To create classes teaching self sustainable practices such as arts and crafts-products that can be sold to help run the project and for future financial independence for it’s participants.

To demonstrate basic hygiene skills such as hand washing and the proper manner in which to clean clothing etc.

To integrate castes. Setrawa project, unlike Jodhpur Sambhali will be promoting mixed castes.

We are looking forward to promote practices for eco-friendly livelihood such as recycling of old used materials, and by using household water to grow a kitchen/vegetable garden.

Future possibilities may include improving general infrastructure and appearance of the village. For example: plantations, providing shade, drainage systems, building roads, street lights, awareness programs on health, hygiene, aids, education to help stop child marriages, equality etc… in the form of a council or community assembly group.
